Reuters, citing unnamed sources, claims that the aim of the project is to convince American lawmakers about TikTok’s independence and prevent a possible ban in the country. The report claims that code sharing would cut off access to ByteDance’s vast engineering resources.
TikTok vehemently denied the report, calling it “misleading and factually incorrect.” Spokesperson Michael Hughes said that the work was not intended to divide the company, but to ensure data security and user trust.
The company is currently suing the US government over a law requiring it to “get rid” of ByteDance by January 2025.
