Buryat is considered a low-resource language, making it difficult to create a parallel corpus of data for translation. On the Internet you can only find electronic dictionaries or phrasebooks. The press service noted that young people are becoming less and less interested in preserving the Buryat language, and the decrease in the number of people speaking this language, according to the Russian census, confirms this.
Developer Dariya Baturova has created a parallel corpus of texts and translations for Russian-Buryat and Russian-Mongolian translation. She trained two translation models and compared them to existing counterparts and found that one of them performed better.
In the future, it is planned to create a website with a Russian-Buryat online translator, which will be useful for native speakers, students, researchers and anyone interested in preserving the Buryat language.
