Brownlee talked about three degrees of such ratings. iPhone models have the highest water resistance rating of IP68. To assign the first degree IPX4, the device is placed under an installation in a special drip tray, simulating rain without water pressure. To achieve the IPX5 rating, devices are placed under a continuous low-pressure flow.

But the third level of the IPX6 rating involves first a high-pressure jet of water followed by submersion, which simulates the pressure at depth.

If the devices pass the above tests successfully, they go into production. This is how Apple combats the early problems that occur when water gets into the iPhone’s casing and then smartphones malfunction.

But moisture protection also has its drawbacks. Due to this technology, the repairability of iPhones is decreasing. “These two factors can be at odds with each other because they make the device virtually damage-proof while being harder to work on and repair,” John Ternus, the company’s chief technical officer, said of Apple’s testing.
