AT&T spokesman Jim Kimberly explained: “Our network is not experiencing a nationwide outage. There is a nationwide issue affecting some customers’ ability to make inter-carrier calls. “We are working closely with Verizon to determine the nature of the issue and necessary actions.”

Verizon spokesman Kevin King also noted that while the network was operational, customers in the Northeast and Midwest experienced difficulty “making calls or texting customers served by another carrier.”

The exact cause of the problems remains unclear, but Downdetector charts show that the problems began around 2pm ET and were resolved around 8pm ET.
