Digital security expert Alex Hagenah has developed a tool that can extract and reproduce all the information collected by Windows Recall. Considered an ethical hacker, he developed the software that would alert the tech community. This feature would be potentially dangerous if rolled out globally as designed.
According to Hagenah, the tool called TotalRecall works like Trojan 2.0. It can access the database created by Recall and retrieve any information stored in the notebook.. The tool was introduced by Microsoft last month during the announcement of Copilot+ PCs. These laptops can perform artificial intelligence (AI) tasks natively.
Retrieval is a feature that allows you to use natural language to search for recently accessed information that may have been “lost.” To do this, the feature creates a database with screenshots taken every five seconds on the device. This database contains plain text information that can be easily accessed by a dedicated application.
TotalRecall can find the Recall database, analyze all the information in it and create an exact copy of the file. The software does this automatically and can set a date range to perform the task. Additionally, the tool is typically capable of extracting 24 hours of collected data in just two seconds.
Why is a recall dangerous?
Retrieval allows users to retrieve information they did not know how to access. For example: A person may review a recipe that he accesses through his browser, but may not remember the page address or website.
The problem is application database is not encrypted. It can only be accessed by the user or through authentication. However, there has long been malware that can disrupt this type of security.
It records any activity such as recall screenshots, list of websites with logins and passwords opened on the computer. Hagenah warns that the broker can easily recover such information; This could be a disaster for companies that allow users to become administrators of their machines.
