Eye movements not only reflect lack of attention, but also affect perception of the world and daily activities. Analyzing what people with dementia look like will help assess their quality of life and develop methods of correction.
Traditional methods of diagnosing dementia often use verbal instructions, which may not be clear to patients with cognitive impairment. The new technique does not require verbal instructions and analyzes natural human visual behavior.
The study included patients with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, the two most common types of dementia. Participants were shown complex, realistic scenes with many objects.
Analysis using a computer model of visual attention revealed for the first time patterns of eye movements specific to each type of dementia. Based on these patterns, scientists created an artificial intelligence tool that can distinguish between these two types of dementia.
