Artificial intelligence could be of significant help as the workload on radiologists increases due to frequent prostate MRI scans in high-risk men. The PI-CAI project hosted a competition between AI teams and radiologists using more than 10,000 MRI scans.
AI detected almost 7% more significant prostate cancer cases and 50% fewer false suspicions. If these results are confirmed in future studies, the workload of radiologists can be greatly reduced and diagnostic accuracy can be increased by reducing the number of unnecessary biopsies. However, the developed AI still needs to be validated and is not yet available in clinical application.
