It is reported that the “Martian” signal was transmitted to Earth by the European Space Agency’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter satellite and this occurred on May 24. Scientists were not able to decipher the signal right away, so the community of space enthusiasts got involved in the study.

The initiator of the decoding was SETI Institute resident artist Daniela de Paulis, who called it the “Space Logging” project. He invited enthusiasts, numbering about 4 thousand people in total, to simulate the reception of the received signal using not only scientific but also artistic methods.

As a result, the signal was deciphered by the artists, father and daughter John and Sarah. Nothing more is known about them.

The signal turned out to be an information fingerprint – the structure of molecules of five amino acids necessary for life. “These molecules were displayed in blocks with different numbers of pixels: one block for hydrogen, six for carbon, seven for nitrogen, and eight for oxygen,” Science XXI writes.

Moreover, Paulis received approximately 54 thousand messages on Discord before he could interpret the signal.
