Although macOS has mechanisms for updating Apple accessories, customers found that their devices were stuck on the original factory firmware. For example, many Magic Mouse users, including those who purchased their devices in 2020, are still using firmware 1.9.2. This suggests that new firmware updates may only be included in new hardware shipments, leaving existing owners without updates.

Apple hasn’t detailed what the new firmware includes, but it will likely include bug fixes and reliability improvements.
