Researchers found that stopping the immune molecule interleukin-6 signaling through the gp130 protein protected liver cells from fat-induced damage. These results will be used to develop new treatments for steatohepatitis and other obesity-related diseases.

Gp130 protein and regulation of mitochondrial function may become new targets in the treatment of fatty liver disease. Next steps include developing and testing substances that can block IL-6 signaling and protect liver cells.

Fatty liver disease often occurs in people who are overweight and have metabolic syndrome and leads to inflammation and cell damage. While without treatment the pathology can lead to fibrosis and cirrhosis, there is no effective treatment for steatohepatitis.
