Microsoft has resolved a recent issue in Windows that caused the Copilot application to appear in the list of installed applications on the computer. The error appeared after the artificial intelligence (AI) update integrated into the Edge browser.

Since the end of March, some users began to notice this 8 KB sized software in the list of applications. This created anxiety and distrust because users did not know how they got to this point. Shortly after, Microsoft rolled back the update to fix the flaw.

The company even declared that the app was harmless. It not only collected or analyzed user data but also did not perform any background tasks. However, on June 13, a new Edge update completely resolved the problem.

The new version of Edge (build 126.0.2592.56) already brings integrated Copilot updates without additional entry to the applications list. Updating is recommended even for those who do not use the browser, which must be restarted afterwards. If the “intruder” application is still considered installed, restarting the computer is also recommended.

Bug amid security criticism

The issue with Copilot was an unfortunate coincidence at a time when Microsoft was being criticized for Recall. The new Windows 11 feature is also AI-based, but was delayed due to concerns about the way the software was designed.

Experts claim that Recall is a potentially unsafe tool that can affect end users and even companies. To allow the user to find already accessed information, the application stores the data in an unencrypted database that hackers can use.

Recall was supposed to launch yesterday (18) alongside Copilot+ PCs. After the poor response to the functionality, Microsoft decided to test it among Windows 11 Insiders looking to launch it globally.
