Lead author Isabelle John of the Kavli Institute proposes that the abundance of dark matter near the galactic center allows these stars to remain “forever young.” This hypothesis is detailed in a paper awaiting peer review on arXiv.

Dark matter, which makes up 27% of the universe, is difficult to find and can only be detected by gravitational influence. Previous studies have examined their interactions with stars, including suggestions that neutron stars and even some ordinary stars discovered by the Webb telescope may be powered by dark matter.

Future observations with modern telescopes may confirm the role of dark matter in these events.
