A study conducted at TPU’s Advanced Materials Laboratory found that adding niobium metal foil between ceramic layers significantly increases the fracture toughness of composites. This makes the material less brittle and able to withstand high degrees of deformation without completely breaking, the press service said.
Experimental parts produced with spark plasma sintering demonstrated improved mechanical properties and uniform structure. The scientists also plan to conduct further research, including creating composites with additional layers of other metals, such as tantalum.
