The integration of AI has significantly improved the Earth observation process. It is now possible to process large volumes of data quickly and accurately, helping to transform raw data into actionable insights.

As part of its initiative to develop innovative technologies for Earth observation space missions, ESA launched the Φ-sat-1 satellite in 2020. This was the European Space Agency’s first experiment using artificial intelligence for Earth observation, paving the way for the next mission, Φsat-2.

Measuring just 22x10x33cm, the Φsat-2 satellite has a multispectral camera and an artificial intelligence computer that processes images in real time, promising to provide better ways to monitor our planet.

The satellite runs six artificial intelligence applications that can transform imagery into maps, detect and classify clouds and provide information about cloud distribution, as well as detect and classify ships, compress shipboard imagery and transmit it to Earth, detect anomalies in marine ecosystems and detect wildfires.
