But that was only true for Google’s own products. The company will now extend the new display style to maps integrated into third-party apps.

As Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority points out, the Google Maps platform consists of APIs and SDKs that allow third-party websites and mobile apps — both Android and iOS — to integrate the service. And for now, third-party app developers who integrate Google Maps into their products aren’t required to use the new “cloud style” of maps. The style will be fully updated automatically in 2025.

Developers who use special unique identifiers that represent an instance of Google Map for a particular application will automatically receive updates but will not be able to use this style.

Google says in its help documentation that with cloud computing, “developers will be able to create custom roadmaps for their users without having to update the app code every time the map style changes.” This simplifies app support.

At the same time, many developers and designers dislike the new style. Rahman writes that Google Maps’ “cloud colors” have become brighter overall. Main and side roads are now gray instead of yellow or white, ponds are now turquoise instead of blue, forests are now pastel green instead of dark green, and routes are now brighter and have a “hard blue” color scheme.
