According to Rostelecom’s message, the cause of the problem was technical issues in the operation of Google-owned equipment used in the network infrastructure and traffic exchange points.
This equipment, the company explains, is used for caching and loading acceleration.
“Due to the problems with the operation of this equipment and the inability to expand it in response to the growth in processed traffic, there is a serious overload of existing capacities, including in peer-to-peer connections,” Rostelecom explains, warning that this may affect the speed and quality of video on YouTube.
Mash notes that videos will load more slowly on all operators. According to sources at the channel, traffic has increased and the infrastructure stopped being updated two and a half years ago, so it cannot cope with the load.
Earlier, on June 28, MP Anton Gorelkin said that if YouTube were to be blocked by the authorities in Russia, the regulator would slow down access speeds.
“And since the option of slowing down YouTube seems more realistic than blocking it completely, everyone involved in this activity should take this scenario into account,” Gorelkin wrote on his Telegram channel.
