More than 220 residents have filed a petition opposing the project, citing concerns about habitat destruction, increased pollution, increased electricity consumption and depletion of the area’s groundwater.
The proposed 3.63 million megawatt data center, which is expected to emit about 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, has faced serious opposition. Yuji Ohtake, a representative of a residents’ group, condemned the construction, accusing it of endangering Akishima’s ecological balance.
Locals claim the project would require the felling of 3,000 trees, posing a threat to native species such as goshawks and badgers, and have raised the alarm over what they say is a flawed planning process that led to the data centre being granted permission.
A group of residents is considering filing a lawsuit to challenge the project and have it reviewed.
