The law, passed after lengthy debate, bans “risky AI applications that threaten citizens’ rights,” including “biometric profiling” and “predictive policing tools” to obtain sensitive information.
As part of the phased implementation of the Artificial Intelligence Law, companies must meet certain deadlines: Bans on prohibited uses of AI will come into force on February 2, 2025, and mandatory implementation rules will come into force on May 2, 2025. By August 2025, AI systems such as chatbots will have to comply with copyright laws and transparency requirements.
The most stringent requirements apply to “high-risk” AI systems integrated into critical sectors such as infrastructure and healthcare, with the deadline extended to August 2027. There are significant fines for non-compliance, which can reach €35 million, or 7% of global revenue.
