The study, led by Dr. Ariel Tankus and Dr. Ido Strauss, was published in the journal Neurosurgery. These results offer hope for people who are unable to speak due to diseases such as ALS, stroke or brain injury to regain the ability to speak.

The experiment began by recording brain activity while pronouncing certain syllables. The computer was then trained to recognize these sounds and the participant imagined himself making them. The computer successfully played back the pre-recorded sounds.
