The “Basic” plan, previously the most affordable way to watch Netflix ad-free, will slowly disappear from every device. In June, Netflix began switching Basic plan subscribers in the UK and Canada to an ad-supported plan, and now it plans to make the same changes in the US and France.
The goal of eliminating that subscription tier is to increase ad revenue. Netflix said the ad-supported plan now accounts for more than 45% of new subscriptions in the regions where it’s available. The company also said it plans to grow its subscriber base in the coming years.
