In response to widespread talk that smart devices are eavesdropping on conversations of people close to them, Dmitry Masyuk, head of Yandex search and advertising technology business group, tried to explain why Alice Corporation’s voice assistant does not do this.

“This is technologically impossible,” Masyuk said of the service, which performs tasks specified by the user. For example, using voice input, it generates a list of products for online ordering in a store.
“All of our devices have a microphone mute button, which simply blocks at the hardware level any possibility of listening to anything,” the speaker explained.
Users find this especially hard to believe since a piece of code was leaked online in 2022, which included an algorithm to turn on Alice’s microphone without even mentioning her name.
Let us remind you that since 2023, Yandex has updated its voice assistant more than once, Alice can now use GPT capabilities, and there is also a pro version of the service.
