Equipped with a smart location and temperature (SPOT) sensor mounted on her dorsal fin, Rio Lady swam 43,452 km from 2018 to 2023. Her travels spanned the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean south of Bermuda, providing unprecedented information about her movements and habitat use.

The study found that the Rio Lady consistently returns to the waters off Isla Mujeres, Mexico, where whale shark densities are highest, during the summer. In other seasons, it has been found in the Caribbean, as far south as Colombia.

This sequential migration is helping researchers understand the seasonal patterns and habitat preferences of these “elusive giants.”
