Russian Railways has discussed a new option for transferring to different seats on a long-distance train if tickets for the entire route are not on sale.

Russian Railways has introduced a ticket purchase service with transfer within the train
According to the transport company, if tickets for the entire journey are sold out, the service will offer the option of travelling from available seats on the same train on different sections of the journey. You can choose seats in a carriage of one or more classes. When booking a journey, the passenger will receive several boarding tickets instead of one.
Transfers will only be possible at stations where the stop lasts at least five minutes. This will allow the passenger to move to a new seat in another carriage.
In the service, such travel options are marked as “Transfer within the train.” The service will be introduced in stages, expanding first to southern destinations.
Russian Railways noted an increase in demand in the summer and gave priority to the southern direction. Since 2022, the country’s southern airports have been closed to civil flights, with the exception of Sochi airport.
