Using stolen US documents and an AI-altered photo, the hacker was recruited under standard screening procedures, including background checks and video interviews. After obtaining the Mac, the hacker immediately began installing malware. KnowBe4’s Security Operations Center (SOC) detected the unusual activity and traced it to a new employee. The employee initially claimed the anomalies were due to troubleshooting issues.

Further investigation revealed that the attacker used a Raspberry Pi to distribute malware and was suspected of being an “agent of a foreign government.”
