The press service of the Kurchatov Institute reported that terahertz radiation, located between the infrared and microwave spectrums, has unique properties: it is absorbed by biological tissues and penetrates various materials, remaining safe for living organisms. This makes it an excellent alternative to X-ray methods. But previously, the efficiency of such sources was low.
Scientists placed an original sapphire lens on a photoconductive antenna that produces terahertz radiation. The new lens made it possible to significantly increase the radiation power. The press service also noted that researchers improved the topology of the emitter and developed new equipment for precise placement of fibers.
