Schmidt said he believes remote work has weakened Google’s position in AI development. A former Google executive said it was impossible for employees to work remotely and visit the office once a week.
According to him, an example of this would be Elon Musk, who works at the limit of his abilities and can fly to a business meeting even at midnight. Therefore, even small startups can be more successful than big tech leaders like Google because they work consciously and are not afraid of challenges.
“Google has decided that work-life balance, going home early and working remotely are more important than winning,” Schmidt said.
But sometime after the lecture, Schmidt emphasized in an interview with the WSJ that he was not talking about employees’ lack of personal lives or the need to give up days off, but about the need to maintain a productive work culture.
