Previously, platinum nanoclusters were used to produce high-octane gasoline, where they were bonded to chlorinated alumina. Now scientists have shown that oxygen can both break the nanoclusters into individual atoms and contribute to their expansion. These changes significantly affect the reactivity of the particles, the press service noted.

“It is now possible to control the state of the particles, knowing their initial state and achieving the desired state,” said Evgeniy Gerasimov, co-author of the study. “This opens up the prospects for optimizing catalytic reactions and controlling their rates. The scientists also identified the key factors and conditions that control the transition from large particles to single atoms and back again.”
