CATL said the construction of the 100 GWh plant in the eastern Hungarian city of Debrecen will begin this year after the permits are obtained and will take no more than 64 months to complete.
When completed, the facility will be the largest CATL battery cell facility in Europe and the second largest in the region, producing battery cells and modules for automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Stellantis and Volkswagen.
The expansion comes as European automakers accelerate the transition to electric vehicles in their markets, leading to an increase in battery demand from local suppliers.
Founder and chairman Zeng Yuqun said in a statement that CATL’s investment would be “a giant leap forward in CATL’s global expansion.”
