This is due to the suspension of part of the tax treaties between Russia and the US. US tax law now requires this amount to be withheld from royalties paid to Russian tax residents.
In the face of such changes, developers may find themselves in a difficult situation: to recoup their losses, they will either have to increase the prices of their products or look for other platforms to sell their games.
At the same time, the Steam commission, which already accounts for 30% of game sales, continues to work, which will further increase the profits of Russian developers.
However, it is worth noting that this tax only applies to sales made in the United States.
Games sold in other regions will not be subject to this additional tax. Valve emphasized that the change is related to the requirements of American tax legislation and was not their initiative.
