In Russia, there is a trend towards a transition to larger memory capacities. Gadgets with a memory capacity of 256 and 512 GB have become more popular in the first seven months of 2024 – 2.4 and 6.9 times, respectively. The most popular smartphones with 128 GB are Realme, and those with 256 GB are Tecno. Analysts from the combined retail network MegaFon and Yota spoke about this in a commentary for RB.RU.

Smartphones with 256 GB of memory have become more popular by 143%, but there has been a real explosion of interest in 512 GB models – an increase of up to 590%. But devices with 128 GB did not show any growth.
Despite this, it is the 128 GB memory capacity that is currently considered the most popular, with every second Russian choosing this type of smartphone. Almost a third of smartphone owners (27%) already use 256 GB devices, and the third place remains for 64 GB drives – this amount of memory is enough for 22% of buyers.
Experts say that the trend towards increasing the storage capacity of smartphones will continue to grow. Memory capacities of 128 GB or less still occupy a significant market share and have their own consumer base. They are often purchased as a second device, as well as for children and older relatives.
“Every year we have more and more applications for work and leisure, the quality of photos and videos we take with our phones is improving and they can be stored in large quantities, and as a result, the weight of each file increases. Users are getting used to increasing storage capacity, which we can see in the dynamics of sales of smartphones with 256 and 512 GB,” said David Borzilov, head of the strategy and sales development department at MegaFon.
He also noted that interest in phones with 1 terabyte of memory is likely to increase significantly in the coming years.
