Most often, players subscribe, buy cosmetic items, new characters, in-game advantages, loot boxes, etc. Izvestia writes about this based on data from the online school in the field of game development and computer graphics XYZ.

Games today are mainly monetized in two ways. The first involves a one-time purchase of the game, without having to pay for server maintenance. In the second case, the game itself is shareware, its release is distributed for free or for a nominal fee and the main revenue comes from in-game purchases.

For online game developers, the second model is more profitable, thanks to which they can keep the project afloat, have money to maintain servers and develop new projects.

“In the gaming industry, donations or microtransactions have become a significant source of revenue, comparable to the cost of purchasing video games, and may even exceed it,” said Vladimir Sinitsyn, COO of online design and technology school Bang Bang Education.

According to Boris Sinitsky, World of Tanks JOO’s Lesta Games group of companies, the most popular games for donations in the summer were Genshin Impact, World of Tanks and Mobile Legends. Overall, the industry in the first half of the year grew by 14% compared to 2023.
