The store recently launched in the European Union thanks to new regulations that open up Apple’s mobile operating system to alternative app stores.
However, Epic Games has faced serious hurdles that the Cupertino team has identified for third-party app stores on iOS.
One of the main problems was that Apple imposed strict conditions on developers who wanted to sell their apps outside the App Store. They had to pay an annual setup fee of 50 eurocents per user, as well as a 10% commission on sales, even if they were not made on iOS.
It is worth remembering that there is also a 5% cut for purchases made within the first year after installing the app. Apple also takes a 30% commission from in-app purchases.
So, while Epic Games has offered better terms for developers, Apple still charges significant fees, making the Epic Games Store unprofitable for many creators.
