Telegram complies with EU laws, including the Digital Services Act (DSA). Messenger moderation meets industry standards and is constantly being improved, the statement said.
“It is absurd to claim that the platform or its owner is responsible for the abuses committed on it,” Telegram stressed.
The statement also says that Durov has nothing to hide and often travels around Europe. The Telegram team is hoping for a prompt resolution of the situation.
- On the evening of 24 August, Pavel Durov was arrested at Le Bourget airport upon his arrival from Azerbaijan as part of a preliminary investigation.
- Telegram’s director is suspected of involvement in “drug trafficking, crimes against children and fraud,” which points to a lack of restraint and cooperation between the messenger’s management and the authorities. He could face up to 20 years in prison in France. In 2021, Durov was granted French citizenship.
- The Paris prosecutor’s office has promised to publish a press release on the Durov case on Monday, August 26.
The Digital Services Act (DSA) is a significant piece of legislation that makes online platforms across the EU responsible for the content they host.
The European Parliament adopted it in July 2022, on August 25, 2023 its rules were extended to large platforms and at the beginning of 2024 the document came into full force.
