Kaspersky Lab experts reported a new spam mailing aimed at extorting users under the pretext of collecting money for Pavel Durov’s legal defense. Attackers pretend to be human rights organizations and want to transfer cryptocurrency money to specified wallets. This fraudulent action raises serious concerns among information security experts.
According to experts, letters from this scam campaign contain slight variations to bypass spam filters. Attackers change the wording, avoid repetitions, use synonyms, and also change the name of the organization by a certain letter. This allows them to remain unnoticed and continue their fraudulent activities.
Experts advise being vigilant and looking out for “red flags” that could be signs of a scam. It’s important to be wary of misspelled messages, carefully check email URLs and domains, avoid donating cryptocurrency unless you’re sure the recipient is legitimate, and always check the sender’s address. Kaspersky Lab emphasizes that you should only trust official messages from trusted sources.
