NVIDIA has created versions of its chips for the Chinese market and slowed down to comply with US regulations. Experts state that the latest, NVIDIA H800, performs some AI tasks 10-30% slower than possible.

However, even such chips of the company help improve developments in China. For example, Tencent Holdings, one of China’s largest technology companies, estimates that NVIDIA H800-based systems will halve the training time of the largest AI systems from 11 days to 4 days.

Note that the restrictions on microchip exports are in two parts. The first puts a limit on the chip’s ability to calculate highly accurate numbers, aimed at limiting supercomputers used in military research. The second limitation has to do with the data transfer rate between chips, which affects the AI.
