The first thing to avoid when dealing with hypertension is to underestimate the impact of eating habits on blood pressure. Certain habits help reduce it.

Reduce your sodium intake. Excessive consumption of this substance can cause constriction of blood vessels and increase blood pressure. Replace some of the salt in recipes with garlic and spices before buying from a store or ordering from a restaurant; read the ingredients of the food. The American Heart Association recommends that people with hypertension consume no more than 1,500 mg of sodium per day.

Eat more foods containing potassium. You should try to eat 4.5 cups of fruits and vegetables a day. Potassium is rich in prunes, lentils, bananas, red beans, oranges, melons, kiwi, carrots, potatoes, low-fat dairy products and kefir, sweet potatoes, chard and bananas.

Cook more meals at homeOne study found that the average fast food meal contains 1,300 mg of sodium. That’s almost the entire recommended daily limit.

Consider the DASH diet or Mediterranean dietThe DASH diet was designed specifically to treat high blood pressure. The Mediterranean diet is very similar.
