Carmaker Hyundai, which will stop producing and selling its cars in the Russian Federation in 2022, has sent at least 17 applications to Rospatent requesting registration of trademarks in our country, RIA Novosti reported.

The applications were filed in August and relate to motor vehicles, components and car accessories. We are talking about trademarks not only of Hyundai itself, but also of the Genesis sub-brand. According to Russian law, if the copyright holder does not use a trademark for three years, it can be cancelled.
“Despite the uncertainty over whether Hyundai will actually bring these products to market, filing trademark applications is a strategy to protect the names both from possible copying by third parties and from sales of vehicles by unofficial dealers,” the patent company’s Margarita Tarasova told Patent Online.
Hyundai has divested its Russian industrial assets (a plant in St. Petersburg and the former headquarters of General Motors) and sold them to the Art-Finance company, but the company retained its warranty and maintenance obligations for vehicles operating in the Russian Federation.
In the winter of 2024, the former Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg began production of cars under the Solaris brand. The line consists of four models; outwardly, they are the same cars that were assembled at the Hyundai plant.
