In a recent study, Chinese scientists examined the communication of people in love. It turned out that romantic partners were more synchronized during emotional processing than close friends.

Fifty couples participated in the experiment. 25 of them were opposite-sex friends and 25 were heterosexual romantic partners. Their relationships lasted from 3 months to 3 years and were intimate.

Participants in the study watched several videos. They evoked many different emotions. Romantic partners appeared to be more in sync than friends when watching the same video. This was seen in behavior and brain activity.

Lower relationship quality was associated with greater overlap in brain activity, while higher quality was associated with greater synchrony in behavior.

Couples also synchronized more strongly during negative emotions than when they were experiencing joy and happiness.
