Arrhythmias are caused by disturbances in the heart’s electrical signals and can cause the heart to beat irregularly or abnormally fast or slow. They are usually treated with medication or defibrillators and pacemakers. However, such devices may not be used in emergency situations, such as in a conflict zone or while hiking.

The method involves injecting a solution of nanoparticles that form a conductive polymer scaffold around the heart. The polymer integrates with body cells and can control the heart’s rhythm when connected to a mobile phone. This approach can keep the heart beating for up to five days before further medical intervention is required.
