The company has already warned its component suppliers that it is preparing for a double-digit increase in production of this model at the Shanghai plant. At the same time, Tesla is still waiting for government approval to expand the company’s territory by 70 hectares, one of the agency’s interlocutors said.
The Model Y was launched in 2020. Tesla is currently modernizing the car as part of the Juniper project. The new version has five seats and production could begin in early 2025.
As Reuters notes, the expansion of the range with a six-seat crossover suggests that Tesla is “under pressure in China from local competitors” because in the United States the company is prioritizing autonomous driving technologies and the development of robotaxis.
