In a study of brain samples from young and old donors, scientists found that gene expression and DNA methylation changed with age. Of particular note were changes in the expression of genes associated with synaptic activity, which may contribute to cognitive changes with age.

Differences between men and women have also been identified: despite the X chromosome inactivation mechanisms in women, some genes are expressed more actively in men and women. These results highlight the importance of considering age and gender when studying neurobiology and may lead to new discoveries in the field of neurodegenerative diseases.
