The phenomenon showed a red galaxy and a spiral galaxy in a complex arrangement resembling a question mark. The distorted image, which included five images of the galaxy pair, was not visible in previous observations with the Hubble Space Telescope because cosmic dust blocks shorter wavelengths of light (which was fine by Webb).
NASA writes that galaxies seen 7 billion years ago show “active star formation.” According to astronomer Vicente Estrada-Carpenter, data from Webb and Hubble suggest that these galaxies were likely merging and that their collisions only “encouraged” star formation.
The discovery not only highlights Webb’s advanced imaging capabilities, but also provides a window into the formative years of the Milky Way, allowing scientists to study the early stages of the galaxy’s development.
