The cost of airline tickets for flights within Russia in the first half of 2024 has increased by almost 20%, averaging 9,150 rubles. Transport Ministry chief Roman Starovoit explains the price increase by increased demand and rising costs for airlines.

As Starovoit said in an interview with RIA, the increase in the cost of air travel is due to several factors:

  • growth in passenger traffic and costs associated with maintaining airworthiness;

  • rising fuel and ground service costs.

According to the minister, airline tickets are becoming more expensive all over the world. Another reason is the problems of the largest aircraft manufacturers.

“Boeing has problems, Airbus has problems with Pratt & Whitney engines. Therefore, in our interaction with our partners abroad, we see roughly the same trends among all of them,” the official added.

The head of the Ministry of Transport advised people to buy tickets in advance to save money. This is because 70% to 80% of tickets are sold well before the flight date at prices below the economically viable fare.

The ministry also hopes to curb price increases through domestic air transport and “wet leasing” – renting an aircraft with its crew, with all other costs, including fuel, maintenance and insurance, being borne by the lessor.
