Apple and Google’s interest in the automotive industry isn’t new, and they’ve made it clear they no longer want to provide just “infotainment” solutions. Both want their software to integrate more deeply with cars to make the jump in quality that the public has been waiting for for a long time; and what is seen with Android Automotive and the new CarPlay are prime examples of this. However, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess doesn’t like the idea at all..

In a recent interview with the German media T3Nthe chief executive expressed disgust at what he sees as an attempt by big tech companies take over the automotive industry. “Just three weeks ago, Apple announced that it wants to take over all infotainment with CarPlay. Apple and Google want to take away our control of the customer, we must not let that happen!” he said.

But Diss’s complaints didn’t end there. He also said he didn’t want to talk Hey Siri to access your Volkswagen information. “We must uphold the sovereignty of clients,” he added. And as if that wasn’t enough, he assured that if platforms like CarPlay become mainstream, automotive by 2030 they will be transferred to simple “metal folders”..

VW CEO sees new CarPlay as a threat

Diss makes it clear that Apple and Google have found a loophole that the automakers still haven’t fixed. The software that currently runs the vast majority of the world’s cars, whether combustion engines, hybrids or electrics, is a mess. And very, very old fashioned. The clear exception to the rule is Teslawhich, thanks to its approach as a software and hardware company (rather than a conventional automaker), was several units ahead of the competition.

But why does the Volkswagen CEO understand that platforms like Android Automotive and the new CarPlay are a threat? Because it is they who reveal the big flaws of automakers in the development of their software. It was never a priority, and now they’re paying the price.

But Diss’s remarks can also be seen as more than just “attacking” Apple or Google for their desire to “take over” the industry. In particular, how wake up call closed doors so as not to fall asleep in such a fundamental branch as software; especially when automakers face the ultimate electrification process.

However, the facial expressions of the executive branch are still striking. Especially when Audi D porschetwo brands from the Volkswagen Group appeared on screens when Apple unveiled the new CarPlay at the latest WWDC.

For now, VW has entrusted the development of its software to a subsidiary called CARY. “We are building a single technology and software platform, including the vehicle operating system, vehicle cloud platform and a new unified architecture for all Volkswagen Group brands,” its website says.
