As part of a new study, experts compared four beverages consumed by more than 16,000 Europeans. These included coffee, tea, alcohol and sugar-sweetened drinks. Coffee was the only beverage significantly associated with slower ageing of facial skin.
According to scientists, coffee’s antioxidant properties can combat oxidative stress and inflammation. Polyphenols in roasted coffee make the skin more elastic and moisturized, slowing down the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of aging.
The type of roasted coffee also matters. That’s because polyphenols are sensitive to heat, says Tyler Long, MD, a dermatologist at the Skin and Laser Center in New Jersey. Lighter roasts may be healthier for skin because they retain more polyphenols.
To benefit from all the anti-aging benefits of coffee, it is enough to drink two to three 250 ml glasses. It is not recommended to add cream or sugar to the drink.
