Good news for all United Airlines users or those planning to travel on the airline in the near future, as the company has announced that it will be providing free internet through a strategic partnership with Starlink.
United currently offers inflight Internet access from a variety of providers, including Panasonic, and charges loyalty program members $8 and everyone else $10 for access on domestic and short-haul international flights.
The airline said it expects to deploy Starlink on its more than 1,000 aircraft over the “next few years,” with the first passenger flights equipped with the service scheduled to begin early next year. United said Wi-Fi will provide door-to-door connectivity.
United praised SpaceX’s satellite service, saying it provides “internet access around the world, including oceans, polar regions and other remote locations previously unreachable by traditional cellular signals or Wi-Fi.” The service covers both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
SpaceX has been steadily expanding its Starlink network and product offerings since its debut in 2020. According to the company, there are currently about 6,000 Starlink satellites in orbit, connecting more than 3 million customers in 100 countries.
