It is the first of a series of “reasoning” models designed to solve more complex problems faster than humans. A simplified version, the o1-mini, was also released alongside the o1.
The o1 model came a little closer to an AI that resembles human intelligence. Although it is slower and more expensive than GPT-4o, it is superior to previous versions in writing code and solving multi-step problems.
OpenAI calls the release “preliminary,” emphasizing the technology’s early stage of development.
ChatGPT Plus and Team users already have access to o1, while Enterprise and Edu users will get that access next week.
There are also plans to give all free ChatGPT users access to o1-mini. The model was trained using a new optimization algorithm and a custom dataset that allows it to use a “chain of thought” to solve problems step by step.
