Uri Simonson, Leif Nelson, and Joe Simmons run the blog Data Colada, where they flagged questionable data in many of Gino’s works. Their statements led to an internal investigation at Harvard that concluded “research guidelines” had been violated and led to Gino being placed on administrative leave.
Gino later sued Harvard and the Data Colada team for defamation, claiming that the investigation had damaged his reputation and contractual agreements. However, the court ruled that conclusions based on evidence, especially if they were based on scientific analysis, could not be considered defamatory. The judge emphasized that “scientific controversies should be resolved by scientific methods, not in court.”
Gino’s lawsuit against Harvard is ongoing over questions about the university’s misconduct policies, but all allegations against the Data Colada researchers have been dismissed.
