Using data from 2008 to 2021, the researchers found that online dating has led Americans to increasingly marry people with similar income and education levels. Women have become slightly more selective about age, while men have become slightly more selective about education. This trend contrasts with data from the 1960s to 1980s, when married couples were less likely to have similar income and education levels.
The researchers note that the increase in income inequality over the past fifty years is partly due to this “sorting” trend.
