Inspired by the natural symbiosis of lichens, this interdisciplinary research aims to use synthetic or “computer” biology to create artificial microbial networks for applications such as disease control, crop improvement and CO2 capture.
Synthetic biology, which combines engineering principles with genetic modification, has traditionally focused on individual synthetic organisms. But the new approach emphasizes creating complex microbial communities that can perform specific functions. The researchers suggest that the function of the entire community is more important than that of individual species.
